Below are some answers to the most frequently asked questions about the Virtual Identity Server (VIS).
Q. How long does it take to install VIS?
VIS installs in minutes, using a standard MSI/setup.exe. After installing the binary files, a wizard guides you through the configuration of the product.
Q. Can VIS be load balanced?
Yes. VIS can be placed behind a load balancer (either software or hardware), allowing for a failover and load balancing configuration for the applications that connect to VIS. In addition, the connections that VIS makes to connected directories can be load balanced as well.
Q. What TCP/IP port does VIS run/listen on?
VIS can be configured to run on any port you choose provided another appliation is not using that port. You can choose the standard LDAP port of 389 or 636 (SSL).
Q. What additional software requirements does VIS have?
VIS was written in Micosoft's .NET programming language and utilizes the .NET 2.0 Framework.
Q. The Microsoft .NET 3.x framework is out. Does VIS support 3.x?
Yes. The 3.x framework includes the 2.x framework and is only needed for applications utiliing the Windows Workflow Foundation. VIS is supported on a machine with the 3.x Framework installed.
Q. Is VIS suppored on Windows 2008?
Yes, but not running in CORE mode. CORE mode does not allow applications using the .NET framework to run and therfore VIS cannot run in CORE mode.
Q. Does VIS support caching?
Yes. Using the configuraiton utility you can configure caching on a connection by connection basis as well as on a per object class basis. Most organizations, however, do not need to use caching for their implemenations.
